Nesting Instinct

It's a beautiful day here in northern California! The sun is shining, the flowers are blooming, the birds are singing in their little nests...

and if the birds aren't making a nest just outside your window, then make your own! That's what I did for my April project for the Whisker Graphics Design Team.

I started with a 5" Styrofoam ball cut in half and hollowed out to 1/2" thickness. (I used a grapefruit spoon to do my carving and it worked really good!)

Then I gave my nest-to-be a "crumb coat" with Tacky glue to prevent the crumbs from coming off.

After it dried, I brushed more glue on the outside bottom of the nest and started to coil my Brown Sugar Divine Twine on it. Add more glue as you go along. The twine sticks to it really quickly, making it easy to coil it on row by row.

And we're coiling, and we're coiling,

When you get to the top "lip" of the nest, you just keep on keepin' on until you finish the

whole thing, ending up on the inside center.

Then just to add a little interest, I cut a bunch of 3" length twines,

knotted them in the center, and

glued them on by the knot at about a 1/2" spacing around the lip.

I added a few feathers (from the craft store) around the inside of the bowl so the birdies would all be snug and cozy.
